Dr. Stéfan Swanepoel
General Manager - Animal Health Products

After qualifying as a veterinarian in 1992 I joined the Richmond Animal Clinic in Johannesburg to try my hand at small animal practice.  I worked with two senior associates and during my time there learnt a significant amount from them.  However, the most important thing that I did learn was that small animal practice was not for me.  In 1994 I joined the Foot and Mouth Disease Institute at Onderstepoort where I was involved with the laboratory diagnosis of Foot and Mouth Disease and African Swine Fever.  I was also involved in research on the occurrence of those diseases in wildlife.  After four years working for the State/para-state the reality of my possible future dawned on me.  In 1998 I therefore joined a small start-up poultry health company called Avimune, to implement molecular diagnostics of infectious diseases for poultry at the company.  Fifteen years later I’m still working for them.  Since then the company’s name has changed (now called Deltamune).  We have grown from 20 employees to over 160 with three other spin-off companies, and the focus of the company has changed from poultry to include all production animals.  In that time I have held various positions including Laboratory Manager, Production Manager and R&D Manager.  I am currently Chief Operating Officer of the company as well as a shareholder.  I don’t practice a lot of veterinary science anymore, being involved mainly in business and management activities of the company.

In 1997 I married Heather and in 2011 our son Luke was born and in 2012 our daughter Erin.  Heather works as a business consultant for Accenture and we live a typical suburban life in Midrand.  We enjoy gardening and cycling but since the arrival of our children both activities have suffered somewhat.  In the bit of spare time that I may have I still enjoy birding and try my hand at fly-fishing sometimes.
